[Drama Review] Oh My Geumbi

Maybe an underrated drama, yet it became one of my favourites that I have seen in 2016! There are several reasons why you should watch it but I think I will only list a few.

1. Family theme

I'm a real sucker for these, seriously! Especially where the parent-child bonds are explored. As the plot follows Geumbi reuniting with his father who did not know about her, they are not familiar with their new situation and there are times when they are uncertain how to interact with each other. They begin to explore new emotions, especially understanding what a 'father' is.

However, the drama does not only explore father daughter relation but also many others; being a mother, being a stepmother, being a daddy long leg (in some ways), etc.

So even though the drama focuses on the two main characters, the side characters add more colours and also explore different relationships.

2. The characters and the actors playing them

Couldn't have found a better cast for this drama! I especially have to mention Heo Jung Eum (portraying Geum Bi). She was really able to express hard emotions that are hard for experienced actors as well. I couldn't not immerse myself with the storyline and feel the same emotions as the characters felt.

Oh Ji Ho recently played a similar role in 'My Little Baby', and additionally he is currently appearing on 'Return of Superman' so he perfectly fitted the role of the dad. I really like his acting style for some reason. It's not appealing for everyone but I really like it. I have been following his projects and it was one of the reasons I watched this drama as well.

One of the actors I wasn't sure that I would like was Park Jin Hee. I previously saw her in 'Fermentation Family' and truthfully I didn't like her performance there. However, this drama really made her shine. I really enjoyed her character and also her attitude in the drama.

Overall, all the actors were well selected for the role and Jung Eum really made the drama shine! She is a real cutie! I also watched all the BTS scenes and interviews, where she really shines. Can't wait to see her in more dramas for sure!

3. The storyline

A drama where the storyline focuses on an illness is particularly hard. I remember crying on drama with illnesses like 'Scent of a woman' and'Bad Couple'. But it is especially heart wrenching when it concerns a child! And this was really the case for this drama. Beautifully presented but hard to watch. The ending was similar to 'Scent of a woman' if you have watched it. Don't want to spoil but in my case, I did think it was pretty well done.

What I admired about this drama was how the scriptwriters tried to explain how the child felt and tried to understand her own illness. I thought it was a clever way to do it but also it was sad as it is the sad truth.

I really think you need to prep a box of tissues for this drama, however I really do recommend to watch it because it is beautifully conveyed.  However, even though it has sad moments, it also has fun ones. The interaction between some of the characters is really enjoyable to watch and sometimes I thought it was more memorable than the sad ones.
