JAPAN - the 'part time work' in dramas

Part time employment is one of the highest in Japan, and it has been increasing over the last number of years. It is no mystery that many dramas have focused on this theme and the difficulties someone suffers as they are unable to grasp full time employment.

Japan is known to have one of the hardest interview process to earn a full time employment that secures one's career. However, Japan has also plenty of supply of temp work, however it is not seen as a secure career.

As it is a common issue, plenty of dramas have focused on this theme but here is my two ultimate favourites out of these...

1. Arifureta Kiseki

One day, a middle ages man stands on a train platforms intending to jump in front of the train. Nakashiro Kana and Tasaki Shota both happen to be on the same platform and sense what is about to happen, and quickly pull the man back to safety. There was an underlying reason why these two realised what the man was about to do... they both had the same intention The story follows how after so much pain, the two characters become attracted to one another and slowly learn to open their hearts again.

I think this drama truly shows an aspect of Japanese life that we often cannot see. It also demonstrates prejudices in the society and how one tries to overcome this prejudice. I think the overall story is really nicely laid out and also the writers have done a great job about the character growth.

2. Freeter, le o Kau.

The story follows Take Seiji, who quits his job after three months and becomes a hikikomori (shut-in). However, after his mother becomes ill, he ends up taking on part-time job at construction site. Soon after he decides to start rebuilding his life.

I felt that this drama did not only deal with the temp work and NEET (not in employment, education of training) in general, but also tried to incorporate more and more reoccurring phenomenon of hikikomori. It really dealt with how the family views the temp work situation and also what obstacles the main character goes through.

For both dramas, the story line was easy to follow and draws you in as you are trying to understand the prejudice that these people are facing. Also the drama focus on how the characters deal with love and future plans which I thought was realistic and painful as well to watch.

Have you seen other dramas with this theme?
