New time format for dramas - 30 mins??!

Have you noticed that all three main broadcasters - KBS, SBS and MBC -  have introduced a new time format for their dramas? Most commonly used previously for web dramas, now there are at least 3 new dramas that have 30 minutes episode running for 24 episodes or 32 episodes!

We have seen broadcasting station experimenting with drama lengths over the years... from hour long episodes, to 15-20 min episodes etc. however this is the first time that I have seen that broadcast channels are consecutively trying out this format!

So why the change?? Interestingly, the shorter format was introduced in order to counter fierce rating competition as these broadcasters are releasing competing dramas at the same slots, etc. So in essence, if a drama is longer it has higher chance to get a better rating thus broadcasting rules were introduced in 2009 and 2013 to combat this, reducing time to 72 minutes then to 67 minutes (source).

I certainly enjoy these shorter episodes because I feel that the drama gets really to the point and leaves out the unnecessary bits! It cannot really get sidetracked like with an episode of more than an hour! However, the ultimate downside to this is the fact that there is less air time... well feels like it (they still release 4 episodes each week so it is very similar to 2 episodes each week).
